Helpful Travel Tips From Bellavista Bed & Breakfast

Travel Tips & Links from Bellavista B&B

Vacation planning typically requires considerable effort so we hope to ease the task by offering some helpful tips as well as links to other local websites that may be of interest to you.

Bring Your Travel Documents...

Remember to bring a passport or a birth certificate with a photo I.D.

It is true that a passport is not necessary for U.S. citizens visiting the U.S. Virgin Islands. However, everyone passes through U.S. Customs upon departure and is required to present some form of photo identification and proof of citizenship. If you have a passport, that works perfectly. If not, you can bring your birth certificate (technically it should be an official one with a raised seal or stamp) and show it along with your driver's license. Note that if you are planning to visit the British Virgin Islands, a passport is required.

Pack Light...

Just don't forget sunscreen and sunglasses. We have beach towels for you. Island attire is pretty casual. Long walking shorts and casual outfits are perfectly acceptable for most island dining. If you are planning a special night of fine dining, gentlemen can pack slacks but jackets are definitely not required.

Don't Worry About Weather...

The weather forecast consistently predicts 85-90 degrees, partly sunny and breezy, and always shows at least a 30-40% chance of rain every day. This typically means that there will be a 10-minute shower somewhere on the island sometime during the day or night. Seldom do we have an entire day of rain or multiple days of rain. We do experience more wet weather during our Fall season when we still have perfectly beautiful days but also ones when tropical waves and tropical storms send bands of heavy rainfall.

Check the Cruise Ship Schedule...

St. Thomas is a popular port of call and cruise ships keep our downtown area vibrant and viable-and they provide a nice backdrop for our harbor view. With a few ships in port, all of the shops and attractions are open so it is a perfect day for shopping or sightseeing. When there are no ships visiting (often Friday, Saturday, and/or Sunday), it's a great day to enjoy our most popular beaches like Magen's Bay. The busiest days are usually mid-week so if you want to avoid the crowds, it is best to plan something off-the-beaten-path like a boating excursion, an island-hopping adventure to St. John or the British Virgin Islands, or a visit to a quiet beach like Smith Bay Park or Secret Harbour.

A Busy Day in the Harbor

Don't Plan Too Much...

"Island time" has a way of slowing down your pace and encouraging you to leisurely linger or spontaneously wander. It is not necessary to book activities or dining months in advance, a few days notice is more than sufficient and many reservations can be made a day or simply a few hours in advance. The notable exceptions are holiday dinners for Christmas, New Year's Eve and Valentine's Day when an advance reservation for fine dining is a good idea.

Limin' Time Libations

Offer the Standard Island Greeting...

"Good Morning," "Good Afternoon," or "Good Evening."

It sounds so formal but so nice. You will find that native islanders are more helpful and friendly if you precede any interaction with one of these greetings.
